Kalamazoo abandoned asylum. Its name was changed to the 'Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital' on 1 January 1978 and in July 1995 it assumed its present designation, the 'Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital'. North Street and N. Prairie Avenue and Denner Street. The Colony Farm unit of the Kalamazoo State Hospital, formerly Michigan Asylum for the Insane, began in 1888 and included a “cottage” system to house up to 350 patients. Many residents were capable of farming and household upkeep. It was originally known as the 'Michigan Asylum for the Insane' and was renamed the 'Kalamazoo State Hospital' in 1911.
